What are Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)?

Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), also known as Green tags, Renewable Energy Credits, or Tradable Renewable Certificates (TRCs), are tradable environmental commodities which represent proof that 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity was generated from an eligible renewable energy resource.

These certificates can then be sold or traded on the open market and unlike carbon trading programs that increase the cost of emitting carbon, RECs act as an incentive & subsidy to produce more green energy.

Some but not all green hosting companies purchase REC’s to offset their use of non-renewable energy sources.
