What are Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)
January 7, 2009 by admin
What are Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)?
Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), also known as Green tags, Renewable Energy Credits, or Tradable Renewable Certificates (TRCs), are tradable environmental commodities which represent proof that 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity was generated from an eligible renewable energy resource.
These certificates can then be sold or traded on the open market and unlike carbon trading programs that increase the cost of emitting carbon, RECs act as an incentive & subsidy to produce more green energy.
Some but not all green hosting companies purchase REC’s to offset their use of non-renewable energy sources.

5 Ways to Make Your Website “Green”
January 7, 2009 by admin
While you may recycle at home, or possibly even pursue some earth-friendly activities at your workplace, have you considered how you can make your website greener? Companies are now starting to green their websites and their website-related advertising as part of their overall corporate greening initiatives.
5 Ways to Make Your Website Green
- Choose or Switch to Green Web Hosting
Many web hosting companies have started to offer their clients green hosting options. Green web hosts have a number of options including using natural energy sources, generating their own renewable energy, using energy efficient hardware, operating an eco-friendly office, purchasing energy credits to offset their use of dirty power, planting a tree for every new client and so on. - Green Advertising & Green Internet Marketing
Consider how you can green your website and business advertising and marketing. If you’re purchasing ads in print publications, consider greener solutions such as green internet marketing – where you actively pursue cutting down on dirty-energy-using and pollution generating advertising mediums such as newspaper, magazines, billboards, business cards, gift cards, coupons, flyers etc to replace as many of them as possible with cleaner digital / internet based advertising & marketing. Green Internet marketing might not be able to replace all of your present website advertising, but it might include replacing 10-25% of your annual marketing budget. Green Internet marketing is a strategy to reduce reliance upon non-earth-friendly marketing & advertising and replace it profitably with online marketing strategies includinig organic marketing, pay per click search engine marketing, social media marketing, mobile marketing. These digital, online marketing efforts we can hope will be a more earth friendly than printing on ink and paper.- Eleven Marketing offers Green Internet Marketing

- Green Your Content
Consider how content is generated for your website. Could your website’s writers work from home (telecommute) for part of their work week? Do they print out all website content in hard copy for approval before it’s posted to the web? Meet with your website content team and brainstorm how you can green your efforts. - Buy Carbon Credits
If you can’t run your website on clean energy, consider purchasing carbon credits to offset your website’s energy use. Websites with info about how to buy carbon credits - Add a Printer Friendly Option to Your Website
You could add a printer friendly version of downloadable documents and/or all pages on your website. These could be in black and white (as opposed to color) and could be more concise, resulting in less paper use when they’re printed. Encourage your website users to “hit print responsibly!”
We’d love to hear your ideas and feedback about how to make a website green.
What makes a hosting company green?
January 6, 2009 by admin
Every day it seems there is a new hosting company professing to offer green or eco-friendly hosting.
But what is green hosting, really? Green hosting companies may take part in any one or a mixture of some of the following green web hosting company pursuits to justify how they define themselves as a green hosting provider:
- purchase renewable energy credits, green tags or green certificates to offset their use of dirty energy
- purchase energy from clean energy providers
- generates green power for its own use –ie solar panels on the roof of the building, powering their computers with exercycles
- rely on 100% wind or solar or hydro electricity to power their web hosting centers
- operate their business as environmentally friendly as possible — recycling, carpooling, using transit, using energy efficient computers, monitors, lights, servers, etc
We’ve come across a number of hosting companies with “green” in their domain name but yet there is no mention anywhere on their website about what powers their servers or what their committment to the environment really is. When you’re searching for a green host, be sure to clarify what makes the host green, how they verify they’re green, and if they use or partner with any third party service(s) monitor or report their “greenness”.
Here at greenwebsitehost.com we are not a hosting provider, but rather an online resource to help you find good green hosting companies. We are committed to helping our environment by providing this service. We also seek to make our offfice as environmentally friendly as possible by using using energy star rated appliances and CFL bulbs in lights, turning off lights and computers (workstations), through recycling, carpooling and telecommuting, using post consumer recycled materials, avoiding the use of any paper-based promotional materials or advertising. We’d like our website host bluehost.com to increase their committment to the environment. At present their stance is that they’re wary of greenwashing, of hosting companies getting on the green bandwagon as a marketing ploy and “not in a position to do “Green Hosting” at this time”. Read bluehost’s ceo’s comments about green web hosting and greenwashing. What’s your take on greenwashing?
Do you think we should move to a purely green host, or is taking other action as described above a sufficient effort? Do you think it’s realistic for companies to all choose green hosting, or is the effort to change hosts simply not worth the benefit? Is it best to strive to build green thinking into the core of a business and decisions it makes in staffing, transportation, purchasing, etc?
List of Green Web Hosting Companies – Wind and Solar Powered
January 4, 2009 by admin
Increasing numbers of web hosting companies are going green. Some are taking small steps by recycling & telecommuting to decrease their impact on the enironment. Other web host companies are making huge leaps by purchasing carbon offset credits or by switching to 100% renewable energy sources.
Some may argue that “green” hosting companies reliant upon purchasing Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) to offset their non-renewable energy usage aren’t “as green” as those that rely on 100% wind or solar energy to power their web hosting centers.
If you want your website powered using solar or wind energy, we’ve compiled this alphabetical list of green hosting companies that offer 100% solar and/or wind powered hosting:

Green Tags for Green Hosting Companies
January 3, 2009 by admin
Many “green” hosting companies purchas Green tags. What are they?
Green Tags are created when wind power or other renewable energy is substituted for traditional power. The result is a shift away from our dependence on burning fossil fuel to produce electricity. Using clean renewable energy is friendly to the environment and reduces emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Green Tags represent the real savings in carbon dioxide and other pollutants that occur when green power replaces burning fossil fuel. Renewable energy is still a little more expensive than buying traditional power so Green Tags are purchased in addition to the electricity that you are now using. Buying Green Tags has the same effect as buying green power. Both replace fossil fuel generators with clean renewables, and both have exactly the same environmental benefits.
